Breast reconstruction is a procedure available to women who have undergone a mastectomy (removal of breast) either due to breast cancer or by choice if they are at high risk for developing breast cancer. A breast reconstruction involves the construction of a new breast and thanks to today’s modern advances in microsurgical breast reconstruction and implant technology, gives women a chance to regain dignity, self-esteem, and femininity.
There are many different types of breast reconstruction including; implant-based reconstruction, Microsurgical free flap reconstructions and local tissue rearrangements after lumpectomy (breast reconstruction via reduction or breast lift).
Many factors play a role in determining which type of breast reconstruction is best for you, including body type, expectations, and the need for radiotherapy treatment. Dr Peters will discuss these factors during your consultation and advise you of the ideal reconstructive option for you.
Breast reconstruction can be classified into two major categories:
- Timing of surgery. Will you have an immediate or delayed reconstruction
- The method of the reconstruction. How is the breast reconstructed e.g. using a tissue expander/implant, tissue flap reconstruction: using your own tissue (autologous) or a combination.
Depending on your individual need and circumstances you may be required to undergo one to multiple procedures throughout the course of your reconstruction journey.
This procedure is performed under a general anaesthesia in an accredited hospital facility
The outcomes shown are only relevant for this patient and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience, as results may vary due to many factors including the individual’s genetics, diet and exercise.
